Along with sustainable restoration projects, we promote sustainability by paying our employees family wages & benefits. We also live, buy and work locally and spend real time and money to minimize our environmental footprint.
Because we are local and centralized in the tri-county area where we work, we minimize our carbon emissions. Our office is located close to the WES rail line, bus service, and our homes, as well as to our projects. Many of our projects are within walking distance of our office, and most are within a short drive. Our staff commutes by bicycle and public transit. We have company bicycles, a hybrid vehicle and economical small trucks. Our larger trucks and carry-alls, when filled to capacity, achieve a per-person transport rate of over 50 miles per gallon. We arrange company-sponsored carpools that are used daily by over 50% of employees. We also support tele-commuting for office staff who work from home one or more days per week.
We carefully research labels and academic studies to vet chemicals toxicity, persistence in the environment, mobility, potential impacts to groundwater and other environmental impacts.
We use all native plants in our office landscaping, and we promote native plants in all of our project work. Our office is xeroscaped, using no irrigation, and the native shrubs and wildflowers attract a surprising diversity of birds and insects, including pollinators.
Because much of our work involves weed control requiring the use of herbicides, we carefully research labels and academic studies to vet chemicals toxicity, persistence in the environment, mobility, potential impacts to groundwater and other environmental impacts. We will not use products that threaten the health of our employees, the public or the environment – even if they are EPA-approved for our use.
We assiduously recycle everything that we can, including all paper products, containers, many plastics, metals and glass. We re-use pin-flags, bamboo stakes, chemical containers, even baling twine and plant bags as many times as these products can withstand wear.
